In brief: EU official visits Mexico to boost cooperation on sustainability

*The European Union (EU) has announced that its commissioner for international partnerships, Jozef Síkela, is visiting Mexico from 14-16 October to reinforce cooperation in terms of clean energy, sustainable transport, the circular economy, and green finance. The EU stated that Síkela’s visit was taking place in the framework of Global Gateway, the EU’s international investment strategy for infrastructure and sustainable development projects. During his visit, Síkela will visit the ARM Natans, a Mexican navy vessel dedicated to collecting sargassum, a seaweed that threatens coastal ecosystems and local livelihoods, in Quintana Roo state. In a statement, the EU says that “together with national and local authorities, as well as private sector partners, [Síkela] will explore how sargassum can be… transformed into renewable and sustainable bioproducts capable of generating green jobs and circular value chains”. He will then meet with high-level officials and representatives of the private sector in Mexico City (CDMX) ahead of inaugurating the sixth EU-Mexico forum, which will take place from 16-17 October and focus on shared opportunities and challenges, particularly in the realm of sustainability.
