In brief: Food insecurity declines in Brazil

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has announced that 24.2% of households faced some degree of food insecurity in 2024, down from 27.6% in 2023. This equated to 18.9m households in 2024, a year-on-year reduction of 2.2m. Last year, 16.4% of households were classified as facing slight food insecurity, down from 18.2% in 2023; 4.5% faced moderate food insecurity, down from 5.3%; and 3.2% faced serious food insecurity, down from 4.1%. Food insecurity was most prevalent in the north of the country, where 37.7% of households faced some degree of food insecurity and 6.3% faced severe food insecurity, followed by the north-east, where 34.8% suffered some food insecurity and 4.8% were severely affected. Food insecurity was more common in rural areas, where 31.3% of households were affected, versus 23.2% in urban areas.
