Details remain sketchy but the United Nations Security Council gave its approval this week to the creation of a new Gang Suppression Force (GSF) which should add significant muscle to the undermanned and underfinanced Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) it would supersede in Haiti. Whether the GSF meets with more success in the objective of wresting territorial control away from the armed gangs that hold sway in the country remains to be seen.
