NICARAGUA: Murillo’s purge continues as dual posts appointed
Costa Rican-based Nicaraguan investigative outlet Confidencial has cited sources as confirming the recent detention of two former military officials, retired General Rodrigo González García, and retired Captain Jorge Danilo Portocarrero Argüello, who are reportedly being held in the notorious La Modelo prison, on the outskirts of Managua. The independent media suggests that this is part of an ongoing purge by First Lady Rosario Murillo, who, following a wide-ranging constitutional reform which took effect in February [WR-25-08], is now co-president along with her husband Daniel Ortega, as she prepares to take over from her ailing 79-year-old spouse, who suffers from lupus and kidney failure on media reports.
