Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has hailed a “completely different vision” on the part of US authorities regarding the tackling of illegal firearms trafficking from the US to Mexico. Long a priority security issue for Mexico, Sheinbaum stated that previous US administrations had not acknowledged it was a problem, focusing exclusively on combatting the trafficking of drugs and flows of migrants from Mexico to the US. On 26 September the two countries launched a new initiative to combat arms trafficking, following a meeting of a new security working group established during the recent visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Mexico.
