Low turnout dilutes historic win for Jamaica’s JLP

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) won an unprecedented third consecutive victory in the 3 September general election, rewarding Prime Minister Andrew Holness for the country’s impressive advances since he took power in 2016. However, it was not an unqualified endorsement. The opposition People’s National Party (PNP) won 15 seats more than in the 2020 election to take 29 seats to the JLP’s 34; and the turnout was a worryingly low 39.5%, only just above the pandemic-affected 37.9% in 2020.
