*Brazil’s federal electricity regulator (Aneel) has lowered the tariff on power consumption to ‘red flag level 1’. From 1 October households will be charged an additional tariff of R$4.46 (US$0.84) per 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh). In August and September Aneel’s tariffs were set at ‘red flag level 2’, when consumers were charged an additional R$7.87 per 100 kWh. In a statement, Aneel explained the ‘red flag level 1’ tariff for October by highlighting that rainfall is expected to be below average, which is not favourable for hydroelectric power generation. Weather conditions are key considerations behind Aneel’s decisions regarding power consumption tariffs. During the drier winter months in many parts of the country (June-August) the reservoirs of hydroelectric dams have lower water levels.
