*Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released its latest report on urban poverty and destitution, which shows that the poverty rate fell in the first half of 2025 to 31.6% (9.5m people). This is down from 38.1% in the second half of 2024, 52.9% in the first half of 2024, and 41.7% in the second half of 2023. The latest Indec report also showed a drop in extreme poverty with 6.9% (2.1m people) of those surveyed living in extreme poverty, down from 8.2% in the second half of 2024, 18.1% in the first half of 2024, and 11.9% in the second half of 2023. In its report Indec attributed the fall in poverty to the fact that household income rose 26.3% on average, above the rise in the cost of a basic food basket (13.2%) and in the cost of a basic goods basket (12.3%). This reflects efforts by the right-wing government led by President
Javier Milei to
bring down inflation, through austerity and currency controls, among other policies, although these failed to avert
a chastening loss for the government in key elections in Buenos Aires province earlier this month.
