In brief: Brazil’s tax take down in August in real terms

*Brazil’s tax authority, the Receita Federal do Brasil (RFB), has released the tax revenue figures for August, showing a monthly tax take of R$208.79bn (US$39.52bn). In nominal terms this marks a 3.56% year-on-year increase compared to the monthly revenue of R$201.62bn in August 2024, but is down 1.5% in real terms. According to an RFB press release, the yearly drop in revenue in August this year was partially due to the relatively high tax take in August 2024, when there was a significant increase in federal tax revenue from the state of Rio Grande do Sul. In April-May 2024 Rio Grande do Sul was devastated by severe floods. Due to the environmental emergency, taxes from the state due to be paid during the worst period of the floods were delayed until August.
