In brief: US official talks cartel financing with Mexico’s banking association

*Representatives from Mexico’s banking association, Asociación de Bancos de México (ABM), have met with US Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence John Hurley in Mexico City (CDMX) to discuss strengthening joint efforts to combat drug cartels and disrupt the flow of fentanyl into the US. During the meeting, Hurley emphasised that Mexico’s financial sector plays an important role in defending against illicit finance, pointing to US public advisories and alerts as key tools to help the banks improve their compliance. He underscored the commitment of the US government led by President Donald Trump to cutting off cartel funding and highlighted recent enforcement actions including the sanctioning of three Mexican financial institutions in June for allegedly laundering money for drug cartels as evidence of the determination of the US to ensure the private sector does its part to dismantle cartel networks.
