*The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has unveiled a ten-year roadmap designed to
“reinforce its strategic role in global trade and safeguard long-term sustainability”. According to an ACP statement, the roadmap is based on two main pillars: water security, achieved through
“increased storage capacity for human consumption” and Canal operations
“which ensure resilience over the long term”, and sustained growth by
“diversifying business activities and expanding transport capacity without increasing water usage”. According to the strategy, which was presented at a media event chaired by top officials such as the minister for Canal affairs,
Jose Ramón Icaza and ACP administrator,
Ricaurte Vásquez, the Panama Canal will invest more than US$8bn in strategic projects such as the Río Indio reservoir which will
“secure water for more than one million Panamanians” and enhance the reliability of Canal transits. The ACP press release also highlights the ‘Interoceanic Energy Corridor’ which will include a 76km pipeline, a project
recently unveiled by the Panamanian government, and two maritime terminals with provisions for the movement of up to 2.5m barrels of energy products per day which will link the Atlantic and Pacific coasts without crossing the locks.
