In brief: Brazil’s economic activity down in monthly terms again

*Brazil’s central bank (BCB) has released the latest figures for its IBC-Br economic activity index, which showed a 1.1% year-on-year increase in July but a 0.5% monthly decrease. The accumulated activity in the 12 months through July 2025 was up 3.5% on the preceding 12-month period. However, this latest drop in activity marks the third consecutive month to register a monthly decrease in activity. The decrease in July was mainly driven by a slowdown in industry. The industrial sector’s IBC-Br was down 1.1% in monthly terms, while the figures for agriculture showed a 0.8% drop and services were down 0.2%. Earlier this month, the national statistics institute (Ibge) reported that Brazil’s industrial production posted a monthly decrease of 0.2% in July.
