In brief: Brazil’s coffee exports down year-on-year

*Brazil’s national council of coffee exporters (Cecafé) has released its latest monthly report, showing 3.14m sacks of coffee (one sack = 60kg) were exported in August. This is up from 2.75m sacks in July but down from 3.81m in August 2024. In terms of coffee varieties, arabica exports in August this year totalled 2.26m sacks, down 11.2% from the 2.54m sacks exported in August last year. Robusta exports totalled 619,360 sacks, down 34.5% from 945,047 sacks in the same month last year. Germany topped the list of export destinations in August with 414,109 sacks, followed by the US with 301,099 sacks and Mexico with 251,166 sacks. The US often ranks as the top export destination for Brazilian coffee, but Cecafé highlighted in a statement that exports have been impacted by high tariffs. US President Donald Trump signed an executive order in late July to impose a 50% tariff rate on many Brazilian products. Although the order listed several hundred items to be exempted from the 50% rate, coffee was one major Brazilian export that did not make the list of exempted products.
