The government of Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has set its sights on combatting fuel theft, known as huachicoleo. In recent months, security forces have carried out a spate of high-profile seizures of stolen fuel and operations targeting the criminal groups involved in the practice. The prerogative to tackle the crime is clear given that Mexico’s oil industry is nationalised, with fuel stolen directly from state oil company Pemex, which ultimately translates into losses for the federal government.
