MEXICO: Trumps ramps up campaign against cartels
News reports have circulated this week stating that US President Donald Trump has secretly ordered the Pentagon to prepare for using military force against Mexican drug cartels and other Latin American criminal groups. The reports, which were published by the New York Times (NYT) and Wall Street Journal (WSJ), point to a potential serious escalation in Trump’s offensive against drug cartels. If confirmed, and depending on the exact contents of the order, it could well precipitate a sharp deterioration in US-Mexico bilateral security relations. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has repeatedly rejected the notion of unilateral US military action in the country and has worked hard to demonstrate to the Trump administration that she is taking the fight against organised crime seriously. The move towards using military force regardless will no doubt grate on the president, coming at a time when tensions are already high amid ongoing trade talks.
