*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for its consumer price index (Ipca), which showed a monthly inflation rate of 0.26% in July and put annual inflation at 5.23%. The annual rate is down from 5.35%
in June, but the monthly rate marks an acceleration from 0.24% the previous month. This latest rise comes after four consecutive months of decreases in monthly inflation. In July this year, monthly inflation was mainly driven by the housing category, which registered 0.91% inflation. A major contributing factor to the price rises in this category was higher household electricity bills, which registered monthly inflation of 3.04%. Including housing, six of the nine categories of products and services measured for the Ipca posted monthly price increases. The highest monthly inflation rates were registered in housing, personal spending (+0.76%), and health and personal care (+0.45%), while monthly price decreases were registered in food and drink (-0.27%), clothing (-0.54%), and communications (-0.09%).
