Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has initiated her plans to reform the electoral system, a pledge she made upon taking office [WR-24-39]. On 2 August she created a commission that will design the reform and engage in dialogue with stakeholders. Sheinbaum has also announced a citizen survey which will ask the public about key aspects of the reform. While the aim is to dispel criticism of a reform imposed by the ruling majority without the consensus of other sectors, the profile of those on the commission and the way in which the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) has previously used citizen surveys and referendums to back up its agenda, have prompted early scepticism around the initiative.End of preview - This article contains approximately 699 words.
