In brief: New financial intelligence head named in Mexico

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that Omar Reyes will replace Pablo Gómez as head of the financial intelligence unit (UIF), which sits under the finance ministry (SHCP). Reyes is currently the head of prevention and reintegration at the public security ministry and is reportedly close to the federal public security minister, Omar García Harfuch. In a press conference, Sheinbaum said Reyes was “a very intelligent man”, noting that he had worked with her while she was mayor of Mexico City (CDMX, 2018-2023), first in the area of intelligence before taking on responsibilities in relation to the CDMX prison system. She said he was a specialist in intelligence, which is a pillar of her security strategy, and had “a very good profile” for the role. Gómez had been in the role since November 2021, when he took over from Santiago Nieto, who resigned amid controversy over his lavish wedding. Gómez is leaving the post as he has been selected to head up a newly created presidential commission that will oversee the drafting of an electoral reform.
