In brief: Brazil’s unemployment rate reaches record low

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures on unemployment, showing a jobless rate of 5.8% for the rolling quarter of April-June this year, equivalent to around 6.3m people. This is down from the 6.2% unemployment rate in March-May, 6.6% in February-April, and 7.0% in January-March. In year-on-year terms, unemployment in the latest quarter is down from 6.9% in April-June 2024. In a press release, the Ibge highlighted that 5.8% is the lowest unemployment rate registered since records began in 2012. The total employed population in April-June this year stood at around 102.3m people, which the Ibge stated is also a record figure.
