MEXICO: US steps up sanctions on major cartels
Since taking office in January this year, the US administration of President Donald Trump has made no secret of its aim to crack down on major Mexican drug cartels. Two cartels – the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) and the Cártel de Sinaloa, especially its Los Chapitos faction – appear to be at the top of its list. The US designated both cartels as foreign terrorist organisations in February [SSR-25-03]. In recent months, the Trump administration has pressured Mexico’s government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum to step up security operations against the cartels with the use of sanctions in particular.
