Since taking office in January this year, the US administration of President Donald Trump has made no secret of its aim to crack down on major Mexican drug cartels. Two cartels – the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) and the Cártel de Sinaloa, especially its Los Chapitos faction – appear to be at the top of its list. The US designated both cartels as foreign terrorist organisations in February [SSR-25-03].
