Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum used an extraordinary ten-day session of congress from 23 June to 2 July to significantly advance her government’s national security strategy. During this period, congress – dominated by the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) – passed legislation overhauling the national guard (GN) and creating new public security and investigation and intelligence systems, as well as approving reforms related to telecommunications, money laundering, and forced disappearances.
