*Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has said that the US oil firm Chevron appears set to resume its operations in Venezuela, after its operating licence expired in late May after being suspended by US President Donald Trump’s administration. Maduro said in an interview with Venezuelan TV channel Telesur that “Chevron was informed of the concession licence to continue its Venezuelan operations,” saying that the vice president and hydrocarbons minister, Delcy Rodríguez, had been informed of the decision. International media including the Wall Street Journal and newswire Reuters also reported yesterday that the US would allow Chevron and other partners of Venezuela’s state oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa) to operate in the country, subject to restrictions. This possible shift in the Trump administration’s policy follows a prisoner exchange that saw ten US citizens released from Venezuela on 18 July, in return for the repatriation of 252 Venezuelans who had been detained in El Salvador since being deported from the US in late March.
