BRAZIL: Government receives fiscal boost

The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced this week that it will unfreeze R$20.6bn (US$3.7bn) from its budget, following its decision in May to freeze R$31bn [WR-25-21]. The partial repeal of the previous budget freeze came after a ruling by supreme court (STF) justice Alexandre de Moraes on 16 July to restore the government’s tax increases which congress had struck down in June.
