Jennifer Geerlings-Simons is the new president of Suriname. She will lead a coalition government headed by the populist Nationale Democratische Partij (NDP) of the late military strongman and elected president Desi Bouterse (1980-1987; 2010-2020). Geerlings-Simons said that she would feel “an additional pressure” as the first female head of state in the country’s history. She might have added that as the first head of state to benefit from an oil boom in the country’s history the pressure will be all the greater to ensure that her government does not squander impending oil wealth and Suriname succumb to the ‘oil curse’.
