GUATEMALA: Berger survives 'supping with the devil'

President Oscar Berger has sailed through his first real test as a ruler and emerged with a few bruises - but having shown that he was capable of negotiating with his arch-enemy, Efraí­n Rí­os Montt's Frente Republicano Guatemalteco (FRG), and holding together the loose `governability' understanding with the other two main parties in congress, the Partido de Avanzada Nacional (PAN) and the Unión Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE).
