In brief: Colombia’s gov’t presents new anti-fracking bill

*Colombia’s Environment Minister Lena Estrada has presented congress with a bill that seeks to ban fracking and the exploration and exploitation of non-conventional oil and gas reserves. An environment ministry statement expressed various concerns about fracking’s environmental and social impact, such as water, soil, and air pollution, and its intensive water requirements. A previous government bill to ban fracking cleared the senate by a large margin in April 2023 but was then archived in the lower chamber after it was not scheduled for debate within the necessary timeframe.
