José Adolfo Macías Villamar, alias ‘Fito’, who was
recaptured on 25 June after escaping from prison in January 2024, has been extradited to the US. Interior Minister
John Reimberg wrote on social media that the extradition of Fito, the leader of the Los Choneros gang, shows that
“the leaders of crime have nowhere to hide”. Fito was flown to New York where he faces charges of international cocaine distribution conspiracy, international cocaine distribution, using firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking, smuggling firearms from the US, and straw purchasing of firearms conspiracy. His lawyer,
Alexei Schacht, was cited in the international media as saying that Fito will plead not guilty to the charges, which carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.
