MEXICO: Backlash from US sanctions puts Mexican banks on edge

Shockwaves rippled through Mexico’s financial system when the US imposed sanctions on three well-established financial institutions on 25 June over their alleged role in laundering money for drug cartels. Not only did this threaten to inflame already tense US-Mexico relations, but the unilateral move sent a powerful message to the Mexican establishment that the administration of US President Donald Trump means business when it comes to cracking down on transnational crime.
