*Ecuador’s presidential spokesperson,
Carolina Jaramillo, has announced that the government is considering adding further questions to a referendum on whether to permit the
return of foreign military bases which are currently barred under the 2008 constitution. President
Daniel Noboa’s government hopes to hold by the referendum by the end of 2025. Jaramillo said that the government is considering including questions on the financing of political parties, as well as proposals aimed at
“boosting productivity, job creation, and legal security”. She said that
“there could be between six and eight questions in total”. The referendum proposal on military bases is currently being analysed by the constitutional court; if the court gives the green light, the national electoral council (CNE) will have 45 days to arrange the referendum.
