*Panama’s education ministry (Meduca) and teachers’ unions have reached an agreement to end the teachers’ strikes which began
in late April in protest over the recently approved social security (CSS) reform, among other issues. As per the seven-point agreement, which is widely considered to hold little benefit for the teachers, classes will resume today (14 July); teachers will
not be paid for days they were on strike; there will be no further legal action taken against teachers who went on strike but any legal action already underway will continue; and the government and unions will meet again on 19 July to revise the points outlined in the agreement, among other things. The agreement was signed by 17 of the 21 teachers’ unions. Among the four who did not sign it was the main teachers’ union Asociación de Profesores (Asoprof).
