*Ecuador’s Foreign Minister
Gabriela Sommerfeld has announced that President
Daniel Noboa’s government has reached an agreement with China’s state-owned Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) that will see it take over operations at Ecuador’s largest hydroelectric plant, Coca Codo Sinclair, which is located in the northern province of Napo. In an interview with local television station
Teleamazonas, Sommerfeld said that
“there’s an agreement which we’re working on and which, in fact, was signed by the energy minister [Inés Manzano] and the finance minister [Sariha Moya] for this company to take charge of operating and maintaining Coca Codo.” Sommerfeld said that PowerChina will pay US$400m to take over operations at the plant – an investment which
was first announced at the end of June during Noboa’s recent trip to China, although few details were provided at the time.
