Chile’s primary election on 29 June produced an unexpected result, which will have profound repercussions for the upcoming presidential race. Jeannette Jara, the candidate of the radical left-wing Partido Comunista de Chile (PCCh), won an emphatic victory over her three rivals, and will now represent a broad coalition ranging from the centre to the far-left of the political spectrum. It is the result that the current frontrunner ahead of the presidential contest on 16 November, José Antonio Kast, of the far-right Partido Republicano (PR), most wanted.
