MEXICO: Sanctions cause a stir

The sanctioning of three Mexican financial institutions for allegedly laundering drug money has served as the latest point of tension between Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum and the US administration of President Donald Trump. The US announced the sanctions on 25 June, as part of a wider campaign to tackle fentanyl trafficking. While Sheinbaum’s government has demonstrated its willingness to cooperate on the crackdown against cartels, it has raised questions regarding the sanctions and demanded proof of the accusations. The case is all the more sensitive given that one of the sanctioned companies is headed by a businessman who held an important position in the government of Sheinbaum’s predecessor and mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024).
