In brief: Remittances to El Salvador up

*Remittances sent to El Salvador by expatriates totalled US$899m in May 2025, up from US$806m in April and US$764m in May 2024, according to the central bank (BCR). Remittances, the overwhelmingly majority of which are sent from the US, totalled US$3.97bn in the first five months of 2025. This compares with US$3.43bn in the same period in 2024. The latest (2024) World Bank figures estimate that remittances account for 24% of El Salvador’s GDP. The latest remittance figures come amid uncertainty regarding the impact of a bill approved by the US senate on 1 July, which awaits approval by the House of Representatives, that introduces a 1% tax on remittances sent from the US.
