Economic overview

Manufactured exports in the first eight months of the year rose by 20.5% to US$3.6bn. The biggest manufactured export category is integrated circuits. Made by Intel, export revenues from this category of goods came to US$726m. Exports of Intel's integrated circuits were 54% higher than for the first eight months of 2005. Exports of other microchips for cellphones and the like, classed as a separate export category, were worth US$421m, up 6% on the same period of 2005. The success of the high-tech sector has mitigated the problems facing the textile industry, the third-biggest manufacturing sector. In the first eight months, exports of manufactures fell by 9% to US$322m.
