*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures for the country’s retail sales, showing a 0.4% monthly drop in sales volume in April. Compared to April 2024, sales were up 4.8%. The accumulated sales volume in the 12 months until April 2025 was also up 3.4% on the preceding 12-month period. The latest monthly decreases in sales volume come after three consecutive months of monthly rises, with a 0.3% increase in January, a 0.6% rise in February, and a 0.8% increase in March. In a press release, the Ibge suggested that the monthly slump in sales in April was largely due to the high bar of comparison, with strong sales figures registered in March. Of the eight product categories measured by the Ibge, four posted monthly drops in April. The greatest slumps in sales volume were registered in information and communications equipment and office supplies (-1.3%) and fuels and lubricants (-1.7%).
