In brief: Mexico’s gov’t announces plan to reduce price of tortillas

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced the signing of the national corn-tortilla agreement (Acuerdo Nacional Maíz-Tortilla) with producers, retailers, flour millers, and tortilla producers. Sheinbaum said the agreement would improve the production chain and maintain prices at current levels. In a press conference, Sheinbaum said the agreement sought to reduce the use of middlemen between those who sell and process corn by having direct agreements between the producer and processor. According to the agriculture and rural development ministry (Sader), the agreement first aims to stabilise the price of tortillas before seeing a gradual reduction of 5% in the average price in each state. Sheinbaum noted that it was “a very important agreement because tortillas are the main food in our country”.
