In brief: Mexico’s unemployment rate remains steady in Q1

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has reported that the unemployment rate of the economically active population stood at 2.5% in the first quarter of 2025 – down marginally by 0.1 percentage points year-on-year. In the first quarter, the unemployed population equated to 1.5m people. The country’s economically active population (formed of individuals aged 15 and over who are employed or actively seeking work) totalled 60.5m in the first quarter of the 2025. This represents 59.2% of the total population, marking a slight decrease of 0.8 percentage points (or 171,885 individuals) compared to the same period of 2024. Informal employment remained a significant component of the labour market, with an informality rate of 54.3%, unchanged from first quarter of 2024. Additionally, 3.9m individuals reported needing and being available to work additional hours, placing the underemployment rate at 6.6%. While this marks only a 0.2 percentage point decrease compared to the same period last year, it is a notable drop from 8.2% in the final quarter of Q4.
