HAITI: Fils-Aimé clings on to prospect of elections

Haiti’s prime minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, called for “national unity” on 18 May to help pave the way for a constitutional referendum to be held and “free, inclusive, and credible” elections. In a stark indication of the scale of the challenge Haiti faces in accomplishing Fils-Aimé’s goal, his message to mark the 222nd anniversary of National Flag Day was delivered not from Arcahaie, a town in Ouest department, in accordance with custom, but from Cap-Haïtien, the capital of Nord department, due to the threat of armed gangs - and amid a widespread power outage.
