BRAZIL: Bird flu harbours larger risks for economy

The outbreak of bird flu on a commercial poultry farm in Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul is bad news on several counts. For one, it is a US$10bn industry and if the outbreak of the disease, also called Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), is not quickly controlled, a good part of that export revenue could be at risk. As the world’s largest exporter of chicken meat, the disease could cause global supply shortages and drive up the price at restaurants and supermarkets.
