The opportunity and risks of AI

It is generally accepted that AI brings potentially vast opportunities and increased efficiency, while at the same time posing significant risks of various types of harm.  Eclac Acting Deputy Executive Secretary Javier Medina Vázquez sought to capture the dilemma by commenting that “AI can foster innovation and address key changes in health, education and the environment. AI can optimise government’s administrative processes, improve decision making and better meet citizen’s demands.” At the same time however, he said “it can also widen pre-existing socioeconomic gaps if we don’t act quickly and decisively, especially in terms of investment, infrastructure, education, computing capacities, and regulation”.
