NICARAGUA: Regime pulls out of Unesco over press award

Nicaragua has withdrawn from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco). The decision was taken by the authoritarian government led by co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo in protest at the decision by Unesco to award its World Press Freedom Prize to the Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa. Unesco is the latest in a rapidly expanding line of international organisations from which the government, brooking no dissent at home and sensitive to criticism from abroad, has chosen to withdraw.
