ARGENTINA: The rise of an anticrime campaigner

It was tragedy, or rather his response to tragedy, that turned Juan Carlos Blumberg, a middle-aged textile engineer and businessman, into a public figure. After his son Axel was kidnapped and murdered in late March, he mounted a campaign to demand government action against crime which, after drawing about 130,000 people out on to the streets, triggered a wave of anticrime legislation and reform programmes [WR-04-14]. In less than two months, Blumberg has become a political phenomenon.
