In brief: Argentina’s opposition demands investigation into IMF head

*Axel Kicillof, the governor of Argentina’s province of Buenos Aires and a member of the opposition Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronists), has announced that he has sent a letter to the executive board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) demanding an investigation into the conduct of its managing director, Kristalina Georgieva. Kicillof stated that Georgieva expressed “explicit support for [Argentina’s] ruling party” in recent comments about Argentina’s mid-term legislative elections. Speaking at a press conference in Washington on 24 April, Georgieva noted that elections were taking place in Argentina in October, stating that “it’s very important that they don’t derail the will for change” and urging the country to “stay the course”, in comments the opposition has interpreted as electoral interference. Kicillof asserted that the remarks “violated Fund rules and its duty of impartiality”, noting that Georgieva had also posed for a photo wearing a chainsaw pin badge – a symbol associated with President Javier Milei’s far-right La Libertad Avanza (LLA) party. “The seriousness of this interference cannot be downplayed,” wrote Kicillof on social media, demanding “immediate correction and an internal investigation to determine whether [Georgieva’s] dismissal is appropriate”. Kicillof added that the Fund, which recently reached a new US$20bn loan agreement with the Milei government, “should not rule over the decisions of the Argentine government and much less over the electoral will of the Argentine people”.
