In brief: Mexico imposes anti-dumping duty on steel nails from China

*Mexico’s economy ministry (SE) has imposed a temporary tariff of US$0.380 per kilogram on imports of steel gun nails originating from China. The measure follows an anti-dumping investigation initiated at the request of Mexican steel company Deacero, which alleged unfair international trade practices by Chinese exporters, which it said was harming Mexico’s domestic industry. The ruling, published in the official gazette (DOF) on 4 April, confirmed that the increase in Chinese steel nails imports had caused material damage to Mexican domestic industries and that the significant risk of further harm justified the imposition of provisional duties. The fee corresponds to the calculated margin of price discrimination and will be valid for four months following the resolution’s entry into force on 5 April. The action aligns with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s Plan México, an initiative designed to bolster the economy by protecting Mexico’s industrial base and productive sector. The tariff follows other recent anti-dumping actions taken against China including an investigation into Chinese paperboard imports.
