In a landmark ceremony on 20 March Chile’s President Gabriel Boric promulgated his government’s flagship pension reform. The occasion marked the most significant change to the pension system since the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). The main focus, however, was not so much on the reform but on the key figure behind it: Jeannette Jara, the labour minister. The main right-wing opposition coalition Chile Vamos, whose votes were essential to push the reform through congress, refused to attend the event on the grounds that it would serve as the unofficial launch of Jara’s presidential campaign.
