Peru’s transport and communications ministry (MTC) announced in February that it will be launching a call for tender for a pre-investment study into the 900km-long Chancay-Pucallpa railway project. The MTC estimates that the railway, which would be one of the longest in Peru, would cost around US$14bn to construct, and could benefit 12m people in the Lima, Pasco, Huánuco, and Ucayali regions. Geography poses one of the main challenges, as the railway would need to cross the Andes mountain range that runs through the centre of the country. The railway would connect the new Chinese-built megaport at Chancay, on the Pacific coast, with Pucallpa, the second-largest city and second-most important river port in the Peruvian Amazon.End of preview - This article contains approximately 416 words.
