During the last general elections in Ecuador in mid-2023 the world was shocked by the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio and the raw violence that had taken hold of the small Andean nation. Then Daniel Noboa, heir to a banana empire, pulled off a surprise win with a narrow lead over his socialist challenger, Luisa González. Today the situation is very similar. Public security is not much better, the economy is worse, and the same two candidates are neck-and-neck ahead of the 13 April second round.
