BRAZIL: Bolsonaro holds lacklustre rally

Former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) posted on social media earlier this month that he hoped for 1m people to come to his rally in the Copacabana neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro on 16 March, but attendance on the day was much lower than his expectations. The main rallying cry at the demonstration was to pardon the Bolsonaro supporters convicted for storming the seats of government in Brasília on 8 January 2023. Legislation to grant these pardons is a major objective for the far-right populist ‘Bolsonarismo’ movement, although not a priority for the broader public, as suggested by the disappointing turnout at the latest far-right rally in Rio.
