Chile’s right-wing opposition is ratcheting up the pressure on the government with the onset of the electoral season. President Gabriel Boric’s attempt to celebrate the publication of positive economic growth figures for 2024 this week was overshadowed by insensitive comments from the agriculture minister, Esteban Valenzuela, about rural security shortly after the murder of a couple in an armed robbery of their home in a rural area in O’Higgins region. Having already forced the defence minister, Maya Fernández, to resign facing the threat of a motion of censure and Boric’s closest adviser Miguel Crispi [WR-25-10], the opposition grilled Valenzuela and demanded his dismissal.
